Bridesmaids and bridesmaid dresses come in different sizes and shapes.
Tall girls need extra length in the hemline and sometimes in the torso. Long and lean is model worthy and can carry off just about any style. Petite girls can get lost in a dress that's overwhelming. Strapless dresses cut more height from shorter girls. Elongate the look with sleeves or a halter top with leads the eye upward. Full figures from 14 W to 22 W need to compliment their positive attributes like beautiful shoulders or a small waist and detract from areas they may be self conscious about.
Bodies also come in different shapes.
Hourglass figures have the shoulders and hips about the same size and the waist at least 10 inches smaller and noticeably narrower. Triangle shapes have a smaller bust line, wider waist and wider yet hips. Inverted triangles have the opposite, a large bust smaller waist and slim hips. Both types of triangles are difficult to fit with dresses, since one size that's ample enough for the hips is way too big for the bust or vice versa.
Keep em Separated
Always fit the largest part of the body and have the dress altered to fit the smaller part. Rectangular shapes have the bust line, waist and hips all the same size. Add a waistline with ruching, detail at the waistline to draw the eye or with a contrasting color belt.
Separates offer the perfect solution for bridesmaids that have significantly different sized tops from their skirts or for those that want a customized look. Chiffon tops include draped strapless, off one shoulder and blouson. Chiffon skirt is A Line, floor length and draped.
Satin tops include strapless, narrow strapped and halter top. A Line satin skirt comes in floor length and knee length. Tissue taffeta is styled in a ruched strapless style, halter, and sleeveless V neck. Skirts are available in short circle, long trumpet flared and pick-up ball gown, floor length with a bustle. Each of the tops can be combined with any of the skirts.
Customize the look still further with a long satin ribbon, belt, narrow belt with rose, belt with crystal pin or bow tied belt.
A top with a twist offers six more variations to the look of separates. Tie the straps as a halter, around the waist to cinch the strapless bodice, over and across the bust line, tied in the back, one shoulder, and caplet sleeves.
Color In the Lines
Incorporate color with the use of separates for even more variety while still giving the bridal attendants a coordinated look. Each attendant can choose the color she likes best from a palette of blues for example.
Another alternative is to select three colors for the bridesmaids to choose their separates from. Keep the look cohesive with the same ribbon sashes. Professional bridal salons offer up to 40 different colors to choose from.
Utilize a Bridal Salon
Online bridal salons are a time saving way to view lots of combinations of different tops, skirts and colors. In a few hours hundreds of combinations can be tried without ever leaving the comfort of your home. Not every bridesmaid has to wear separates if she would prefer a dress.
When viewing colors online, keep in mind that the color you see may not be the exact color of the dress. The size and quality of your monitor and the lighting in your room affects the color. Always visit the salon in person to make the final selection.
Seasons Best
A spring wedding would be stunning with the bridesmaids in light yellow tops and darker yellow skirts tied with pink sashes. Carry the look further with bouquets of pink, light yellow and bright yellow gerbera daisies or bouquets of bright pink tulips.
Summer weddings can take bursts of colors like bright orange, yellows, and reds. Another combination would be light and dark blues. Or light and dark purple complemented by yellow rose nosegay bouquets. Pick up the yellow in the bouquet with yellow sashes.
Fall weddings are meant for deep rich jewel tones like garnet, emerald and plum. Another color palette is traditional autumn colors of pumpkin, russets, golds and browns. Your wedding attendants will look fashionable and fabulous with chocolate, mocha and cream.
Winter weddings warm up with ruby, scarlet and saffron. Go ice princess with light blue dresses and silver accessories. Black is dramatic for winter wedding.
