San Francisco Mint Starts Minting Silver American Eagles To Help With Record Demand!!
The American Silver Eagle Celebrates 25 years by Mike Pagach
The American Silver Eagle is the official silver bullion coin of the United States and was firstly issued by the United States Mint on November 24, 1986. This awe inspiring coin is only availble in the one-troy ounce size and has a face value of one dollar. The American Silver Eagle is warranted by the United States government to inhibit one troy ounce of 99.9% genuine silver and it's substance, weight, and purity are certified by the United States Mint as well. In addition to the bullion variety, the United States Mint fabricates a proof version and an uncirculated version for coin collectors as well. The American Silver Eagle has been fabricated at the Philadelphia Mint, the San Francisco Mint, and the West Point Mint.
The coin's obverse design was acquired from the "Walking Liberty" design which was produced by Adolph A. Weinman and had previously been employed on the United States Walking Liberty Half Dollar coin from 1916 to 1947.This design was relished by the public and is by far one of the most welcomed designs of any coinage yet fabricated by the United States which is why it was brought back to life for the American Silver Eagle years later. Engraved with the year of minting, the declaration "Liberty", and the slogan "In God We Trust" on the obverse segment, this coin reminds us of what America truly exists for.
The reverse design depicts an eagle behind a shield, it's right talon retaining an olive limb, and it's left gripping arrows which mirrors the Great Seal of the United States. This segment of the coin also carries thirteen five tipped stars located above the eagle's head to represent the thirteen new colonies and is inscribed with the phrases "United States Of America, 1 oz. Fine Silver ~ One Dollar," and on the banner that the eagle possesses in it's mouth, "E Pluribus Unum". The mint mark, if applicable, can be seen on the reverse as well. This splendid figure was fashioned by John Mercanti.
The earliest American Silver Eagle coin was struck in San Francisco on October 29, 1986. American Silver Eagle bullion coins do not include mintmarks and were minted from 1986 to 1998 in San Francisco. Then, from 1999 to 2000, the coins were minted at Philadelphia and West Point. Since 2001, they have been minted at West Point only. From 1986 to 1992, proof American Silver Eagle coins were minted at San Francisco and carry the "S" mintmark. From 1993 to 2000, the proof coins were minted at Philadelphia and they display the "P" mintmark. Subsequent to 2001 to 2008, they were minted at West Point and the coins yield a "W" mintmark.
Proof types were not minted in 2009 nevertheless began once more in 2010, and were minted at West Point yielding the "W" mintmark. From 2006 to 2008, the United States Mint produced a collectible uncirculated American Silver Eagle coin fabricated at West Point and they convey the "W" mintmark. The coins were struck by specifically burnished blanks and are sometimes referred to as "W Uncirculated" or "Burnished Uncirculated." No polished uncirculated American Silver Eagle coins have been minted since 2008.
